WhatsApp to soon let you verify forwarded messages on Google
NEW DELHI: With over 2 billion users worldwide, there is little doubt that WhatsApp is the go-to communication app that everyone relies on and therefore becomes a platform where misinformation is also passed around easily — especially with the outbreak of the global pandemic of COVID-19 (coronavirus).
However, it seems that the app is working on rolling out a feature that will give its users a tool to cross-check the authenticity of messages they receive. The app has rolled out this tool in the latest beta version of its Android app (v2.20.96) where it will show an icon of a magnifying lens by default next to a frequently forwarded message. Tapping on that icon will prompt a dialogue box that will read, “Would you like to search this on the web? This will upload the message to Google.”
Once you tap on ‘search web’ you will be redirected to the browser app on your device where you will be able to see search results related to that particular message from across the web.
