Reliance Jio delivers highest download speed of 21.8 Mbps, Idea tops in upload speed: TRAI

Mukesh Ambani-driven Reliance Jio has topped the speed tests of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) by recording download speed of 21.8 Mbps in the month of November, where Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular saw speeds of 9.3 Mbps, 9.9 Mbps and 8.1 Mbps respectively.

Interestingly, Idea Cellular recorded the highest upload speed of 7.1 Mbps in the month of November when compared to other operators. Airtel, Vodafone and Jio recorded upload speeds of 3.9 Mbps, 6.2 Mbps and 4.9 Mbps respectively.

In October Jio saw speeds of 21.9 Mbps, and seemingly Airtel and Vodafone witnessed increase in their download speeds where their speeds were 7.5 Mbps and 8.7 Mbps respectively in October. However, Idea Cellular’s download speed declined in the month of November when compared with its speed in October which stood at 8.6 Mbps.

Even as telecom operators in India seem to be increasing their download and upload speeds gradually, India ranks 109th in the mobile internet speed and 76th for fixed broadband speed globally, according to Ookla’s November Speedtest Global Index.

In the beginning of 2017, India recorded average mobile download speed of 7.65 Mbps and by the end of the year, the average mobile download speed increased to 8.80 Mbps as of November, recording 15% increase

Earlier, some operators had complained about Trai’s MySpeed app for its methods and results, post which the regulator said that it would come out with a white paper which would talk about the methodology and algorithms used by the app for calculating data speeds of various service providers.
