Centre likely to unveil incentive scheme to boost local telecom gear production

NEW DELHI: The Centre is expected to announce a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment, as a part of Atma Nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The Centre is working on a plan to promote local manufacturing of telecom gear in line with the electronics sector where a production-linked incentives have been launched,” a source told ETTelecom and added that it was a part of industry’s long-standing demand.

However, the telecom scheme may require the Cabinet approval, and is likely to be a part of overall Rs 20 lakh crore worth relief package across sectors aimed to revive economical activities which are under severe strain following the nationwide lockdown amid novel Covid-19 pandemic.
