Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has issued a consultation paper titled “Review of the Regulatory Framework for Interconnection”. Trai has said that the focus of the consultation paper is on improving the growth of fixed line access services and hence it has only discussed fixed to fixed point of interconnections.

As on February 28, 2019, out of total telecom subscriber base of 1,205 mn, there were 1,184 mn wireless subscribers and only 21.72 mn wireline subscribers. Hence, in terms of subscribers, size of PSTN network is less than 2 per cent of the total network size.
