Xiaomi says festive season to play catalyst for 5G adoption; eyes 4G-like leadership with value offerings

NEW DELHI: Xiaomi India said that the upcoming festive season will help 5G take off in the country with elevated interest from consumers to buy 5G-capable smartphones coupled with planned commercial launch of high-speed broadband service by Indian telcos.

Muralikrishnan B, President, Xiaomi India told ET that the Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 price segment for smartphones will help drive 5G adoption in the country.

“Rs 10,000-15,000 is the sweet spot as the segment is large enough for initial 5G adoption. For prices to fall below Rs 10,000, economies of scale need to play out…it is too early to jump into that specific price point. It will come to that at some point of time. But to expect that to happen this year, it does look a little bit far-fetched.”
