After the menace of fake news spreading over WhatsApp groups, the Facebook-owned messaging platform has now confirmed that WhatsApp calling feature was used by Pegasus to spy on Indian journalists and activists. Pegasus is a sophisticated spyware sold by Israel-based NSO Group to authorised government agencies globally. The spyware infected victim’s phones through missed WhatsApp calls. The victims had very little control on this attack. All they saw was a missed call from an unknown number and before they got to know their phones were infected with Pegasus. You can use all types of “anti-virus” solutions to prevent a phishing attack or malware. But how can you prevent someone from placing a WhatsApp call on your number.
Despite the tall claims of End-to-End (E2E) encryption, privacy of WhatsApp users is seriously questionable after WhatsApp themselves confirming that E2E is of little use after a device is infected with Pegasus.
