Why the Board, not IT, needs to take the lead in cybersecurity

S Raghunath, professor of corporate strategy and policy at IIM Bangalore, says cybersecurity threats have become so potentially dangerous that the matter can no longer be left to IT departments. The company Boards, he says, must play the leading role.

“The majority of the Boards have to wake up to the reality that cybersecurity begins with the Board of directors. They have to establish a strong set of security expectations. They have to break down internal silos to facilitate technical and strategic collaboration,” he said at the Times Techies webinar last week.

Cybersecurity has moved to a totally new dimension with the emergence of modes of attack like ransomware – AIIMS in Delhi is currently dealing with one.
