US state police agencies issues warning over this iPhone feature

Several law enforcement agencies, including the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Carmi Police Department, Middletown Division of Police, Watertown CT Police Department, Jefferson Hills Police Department, and Fort Smith Police Department, issued a security and privacy warning on Thanksgiving weekend about the NameDrop feature, which released for iPhones with the iOS 17 update. The purpose of the warning was to prevent any potential danger to the users of the NameDrop feature.

Several social media posts, primarily on Facebook, caution those who have updated their iPhones to iOS 17 that the NameDrop feature is set to on by default and could potentially share their contact information when in close proximity to another iPhone. There is a further warning for parents, which asks them to turn off the NameDrop feature on their child’s iPhone.
