Twitter lost immunity under IT Act: Centre to HC
Bengaluru | New Delhi: Social networking platform Twitter has lost the immunity granted to intermediaries under the IT Act, 2000, the government told the Delhi High Court on Monday.
This was because of its failure to comply with the revised IT Intermediary Guidelines that came into effect on May 26, the ministry of electronics and IT (MeitY) said in an affidavit filed before the court.
Twitter had failed to comply despite the government giving all significant social media intermediaries three months’ time to do so, it said. “Any non-compliance amounts to breach of the provisions of the IT Rules, 2021 thereby leading to Respondent No. 2 (Twitter) losing its immunity conferred under section 79(1) of the IT Act, 2000,” the government said.
