Twitter adds fact-check label to Donald Trump tweet
- Twitter added a fact-check label to the US President Donald Trump tweets that made unsubstantiated claims about mail-in voting. It is the first time Twitter has taken action on Trump’s posts for being misleading.
- In his tweets on Tuesday, Mr Trump alleged that expanding access to mail-in voting could lead to widespread ballot fraud, a claim that is at odds with the evidence. Twitter added a link under the tweets urging users to “Get the facts about mail-in ballots,” which included tweets from news organizations and experts debunking the president’s claim.
- Twitter’s decision to fact check came after a widower asked Twitter to delete Trump’s tweets alleging, without evidence, a conspiracy theory that his late wife had been killed by cable news host and former Republican congressman Joe Scarborough.
- In response, Trump issued a pair of tweets alleging that social media sites are trying to silence conservative voices and need to change course or face action.
- Trump wrote “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives’ voices. We will strongly regulate or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen. We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016”.
- In his second tweet, he continued, “We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that…happen again. Just like we can’t let large scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country. It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots. Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!”
