Trai’s views to promote local data centres likely soon
NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is expected to come out soon with a slew of recommendations to promote localised data centres to domestically meet burgeoning demand in line with the Centre’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) campaign.
“India should also become a leader in data centres. In general, data going outside the country should be prevented,” a top Trai official said, adding that the regulator is working on to firm its views and is expected to release its recommendations within a month’s time following the suo motu consultation process already undertaken with stakeholders.
Last month, Trai conducted an open house discussion (OHD) on a consultation paper on creating a regulatory framework for promoting data economy through setting up of data centres, content delivery networks and interconnect exchanges in India.
