TikTok parent plans data centre in India

Bengaluru: China’s ByteDance, which owns the popular short video app TikTok, said it is looking to set up data centres in India. The development comes at a time when the company is seeing growing scrutiny from the government here over how it stores data of Indian users.
TikTok, which has over 120 million monthly active users in India, has also come under fire over the nature of content on its platform. In February, RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) had written to PM Narendra Modi asking for a ban on the social media platform, especially when the Chinese government continues to block India’s efforts to act against terrorists in Pakistan. ByteDance also owns social media app Helo.
So far, it has been storing data of Indian users in third-party data centres in the US and Singapore. “We now believe that the time has come to take the next big leap.
