Telecom industry to feel pinch of spectrum shortage with emergence of 5G use cases: COAI

NEW DELHI: The inadequate availability of fifth-generation spectrum for Indian telecom operators is likely to become a major hurdle in rolling out ‘reasonable’ fifth generation technology as well as Wi-Fi services with the emergence of 5G use cases in the near future, according to a senior official of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

“Once these applications come, then this spectrum will woefully fall short. We have less than 40% of what we require. We have to forecast our requirements and then we have to begin investing,” SP Kochhar, Director-General, COAI, told ETTelecom, as he reiterated the lobby body’s demand for the 6GHz band.
