Telecom department allocates 5G spectrum to Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea to showcase use cases

NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has on Wednesday assigned incumbent telecom service providers Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio with spectrum in the 3400-3600 Mhz band range to demonstrate India-specific fifth generation or 5G technology-based use cases together with their vendor partners during the three-day-long India Mobile Congress (IMC) in New Delhi.

Chinese Huawei and ZTE have also been invited this time by the government. The development may further brighten their prospects for the country’s future deployments.

“All telecom service providers and original equipment manufacturers and academic institutions willing to showcase their 5G technologies at IMC- 2019 are hereby directed to coordinate and share spectrum in the frequency bands 3.4 GHz-3.6 GHz as well as 26 GHz-28 GHz during the event,” DoT’s Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing (WPC) in a notification Wednesday said.
