Stage set for data protection law after Rajya Sabha nod

NEW DELHI: The stage is all set for India to get a privacy law for protecting online data of citizens, with the Rajya Sabha approving the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill on Wednesday. This happens after six years of the Supreme Court declaring ‘Right to Privacy’ as a fundamental right. The bill was approved by the Lok Sabha on Monday. Now it needs the President’s assent to become a law.

Seeking to protect the privacy of Indian citizens, the bill proposes a penalty of up to Rs 250 crore on entities for misusing or failing to protect the digital data of individuals. The bill puts many obligations on any institution taking the data of any citizen.
