RCom’s GCX, PrimeTel strengthen partnership to upgrade subsea cable system

Global Cloud Xchange (GCX), a subsidiary of Reliance Communications (RCom) and Cyprus-based telecom service provider PrimeTel Tuesday further enhanced their partnership with a 100Gbps upgrade to GCX’s HAWK subsea cable system branch into Cyprus.

This network upgrade will offer robust connectivity solutions and drive new business opportunities across the strategic Europe-Cyprus-Middle East-Asia route, Mumbai-based RCom in a statement said.

The enterprise arm of Anil Ambani-driven RCom, earlier said that the company had plans to lay a submarine cable from Mumbai to Italy and to Hong Kong measuring 22,000 kilometres at a cost of $600 million to increase its subsea cable length to 90,680 km.

“With the recent upgrade, we have now broadened our reach into PrimeTel’s Cyprus Hub in Yeroskipos, providing enhanced coverage to meet the growing demand for high performance, low-latency connectivity across the emerging markets in the Middle East and Asia,” Wilfred Kwan, Chief Operating Officer at RCom& GCX said.

The network enhancement, according to the executive, has already started.

Through our partnership with GCX, we will further establish Cyprus as a leading telecommunications hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and tap on its prime geographic location to accommodate exponentially growing bandwidth needs across the emerging markets,” Theodosis Theodosiou, Chief Commercial Officer of PrimeTel said.

Theodosiou also added that businesses across the globe require new levels of support to facilitate the mass movement of Internet traffic, OTT content, enterprise data and cloud computing services.
