Qualcomm announces Snapdragon XR2, world’s first 5G capable XR chip

Maui: Qualcomm today, announced the world’s first extended reality (XR) platform with support for 5G connectivity. The company’s new Snapdragon XR2 chipset is an upgrade for the XR1 launched a while back.

The company claims that the XR2’s CPU and GPU performance are double that of the earlier version, while artificial intelligence (AI) processing speeds have increased by 11 times. There’s also a 6x increase in video resolution support and 4x bump in the video bandwidth the chipset supports.

The XR2 chipset also supports 8K videos, including those in 360 degrees, at 60fps. It can do 4K at double the frame rates while HDR10 and HDR10+ formats are also supported. 3D spatial sound also works with the XR2, while a custom version of Qualcomm’s low power Hexagon digital signal processor (DSP) inside allows voice support.
