Sans regulatory measures, Over The Top (OTT) services have become a networking tool of choice for terror organizations and all hues of criminals. It is both a national security threat and a law and order nightmare. OTT services are used for religious indoctrination, recruitment by radical groups, circulation of fake news and for creating fear psychosis among caste and religious groups. The picture that emerges on the privacy front is also turgid. Encrypted messages and chats are prone to hacking because of backdoors and also due to them being in an unencrypted state when backed up. At the recently held Trai open house on “Regulatory Framework for OTT Communication Services”, telcos bitterly complained about the burden of security, data localization and real-time legal interception being borne by them alone while OTT services are given a free-run.
