New regulation to tackle deepfakes soon: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
Deepfakes have been in the news a lot lately. In the last few weeks, multiple deepfake video of popular Bollywood actresses like Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif and others have made rounds on the internet, giving warning signs of the potential misuse of the technology. Terming deepfakes as a new threat to democracy, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the government will soon come up with new regulations to tackle deepfakes.
“We will start drafting regulation today itself, and within a short time we will have a new set of regulations for deepfakes … this could be in the form of amending existing framework or bringing new rules, or new law,” said Vaishnaw who met social media platforms on Thursday (November 23).
