MRI – Make in India

Department of Electronics & IT (DeitY) in its December report to the Prime Minister Office (PMO) has informed them of tying up with SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research, an autonomous unit of DeitY) to develop MRI system locally at a cost of about Rs 38.50 crore by June 2019.
DeitY and its several autonomous units (including Media Lab Asia or MLA) in the past had committed several such projects but none of them could be successfully commercially launched. Looking at the budget, MRI project too will be heading for a prototype lab sample incapable of being translated into commercial launch. By 2019, everyone will forget about this project too and there will no answerability. No review has been done on the allocations done in the past projects.
Besides the above, DeitY has stated in its report that it has also notified an area falling under the Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra qualifying for Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC) Scheme.
