Move over 48MP camera, phones with over 100MP sensors may come soon
NEW DELHI: Circa 2015: smartphones are rapidly taking over the planet and the poor old D-SLR cameras are on their last legs as megapixels is all one cares about. Fast forward two years later and we are told that it’s not about the megapixels silly but the overall computational abilities of the smartphones. Now, we are in 2019 and guess what? Apparently megapixels do matter. Don’t believe us? Check out the ads from Oppo, Xiaomi , Huawei and Vivo and it’s the 48MP camera that is plastered over billboards, social media and actors telling us that this is the ‘real deal’. So with such perplexing notions about smartphone cameras and the whole megapixel theory, we decided to ask the people – Qualcomm in this case — who make processors that enable smartphone cameras to take 48MP images, what’s the ‘real deal’ with this latest obsession with megapixels?
