Mobile VPN downloads in India see a rise

India ranked third globally in downloading mobile VPN (virtual private network) apps, with over 57 million downloads in the last 12 months, according to a report by VPN review service Top10VPN. Indonesia topped, while the United States followed closely behind.
The firm analyzed VPN apps discoverable in Google Play and Apple’s App Store, for a total of 293 unique apps.
A VPN allows one to bypass geo-blocks and government censorship by hiding the real Internet Protocol (IP) address on the Internet.
“In India alone, where internet shutdowns as a response to political turmoil have been more frequent than anywhere else in the world, there were 57 million downloads, a fivefold increase compared to the year before,” according to the report.
