MeitY fails to notify online content rules

BENGALURU: New rules to police online content have not been notified before Wednesday’s deadline.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) told the Supreme Court in October that it would notify the Information Technology [Intermediaries Guidelines (Amendment) Rules] 2018 by January 15. The final rules are expected to change the way internet companies are held responsible for content shared on their platforms.

A senior government official, however, told ET on the condition of anonymity that MeitY may notify the guidelines before the next hearing of the case in the top court, expected in the last week of January.
