LG acquires 14 patents for pushing microLED displays in Watch Ultra and other Apple devices

A report by Trend Force in July suggested that LG will be the sole supplier for Apple Watch Ultra’s microLED displays. In a push to mass produce microLED displays for Apple, LG Display, a major supplier of displays to Apple, has acquired 14 US patents for microLED technology from Taiwanese company Ultra Display Technology (UDT). According to a report by The Elek, the patents cover a variety of microLED technologies, including mass transfer, stacking, and applications in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and heads-up displays (HUD).

The acquisition is seen as a major step forward for LG Display’s plans to supply microLED displays to Apple for its future smartwatches, including the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025.
