Legal regime of data privacy in China: Hurdle for foreign tech firms

Yahoo Inc. has decided to shut its operations in China, citing an “increasingly challenging” business and legal environment as the cause. The services have stopped as of November 1. The Yahoo had a 22 year presence in China.

The Engadget China site by Yahoo has a popup notice for its users stating that the site will no longer be publishing content. Recently, the professional networking platform LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, has said that this year, it will be rolling down the curtains of the Chinese version of the site and bring in its place a jobs board having no social networking functions.
