June smartphone imports soar to 3-year high of Rs 2,225 crore by value
New Delhi: Smartphones imports in June rose to a 3-year high at₹2,225.2 crore by value, nearly six times from May and manifold from the measly ₹5.6 crore in February, after which the battle with the pandemic unleashed local production constraints even after two months of the easing of the lockdown, data from ministry of commerce showed.
Market experts expect the imports to soar even higher for July as the rollover impact of the 10-day backlog caused by customs scrutiny of imports of phone parts in the last week of June caused a near washout in production for Chinese brands like market leader Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Realme, who dominate the world’s second largest smartphone market.
