There has been a communication breakdown in militancy infested Sopore town and its adjoining areas, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts in the state of Jammu & Kashmir as all the towers of the cellular companies became non-operational after the attack from unknown gunmen telling the cellular companies to wind up their businesses from the area.

Attacks started on May 24, when two hand grenades were hurled at a mobile tower in Sopore. One grenade exploded but did not cause any damage. The next day, unidentified men opened gunfire at a mobile franchisee outlet, killing 26-year-old Rafiq Akbar, who sold mobile handsets. Two others were injured in the attack. One Ghulam Hassan Dar, who had a mobile tower installed on his land, was killed by gunmen in Dooru village on May 26 evening. On May 27, another person with mobile tower on his land was wounded after unidentified gunmen shot at him in Pattan. Late on May 31st night, there were reports of another grenade attack on a mobile tower in the Kupwara district.
