IT Ministry asks WhatsApp for details of recent spyware attack

NEW DELHI: The government has asked WhatsApp for details on the recent spyware hack that allowed attackers to snoop on users and any remedial action taken, after which it will decide whether to issue an advisory to officials who widely use the popular messaging app.

WhatsApp said only a “relatively small amount of people” have been affected globally. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has also asked WhatsApp whether users in India have been compromised and how many. India is WhatsApp’s biggest market with well over 200 million users.
