iPhone SOS feature: Elon Musk’s SpaceX will send satellites for Apple-backed company
Apple introduced the Emergency SOS feature with iPhone 14 last year, in collaboration with satellite communications company Globalstar. Now, the US-based company has tied up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to launch more satellites.
According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Globalstar has signed a $64 million deal with SpaceX to send satellites into space in 2025. These satellites are likely to play an important role in expanding the emergency SOS services provided by Globalstar.
The company will send at least 17 satellites to low Earth orbit to add to Globalstar’s existing constellation. Globalstar entered into a $327 million purchase agreement with MDA for those satellites in February last year and Rocket Lab acted as subcontractor supplying the spacecraft chassis.
