India must close gap with China on fibre deployment: STL

Mumbai: Indian telecom companies and internet providers must double-up fibre deployments from the current 20 million kilometers per year and must aim to reach nearly 120 million homes with quality broadband delivering speeds of at least 1Gbps, a top Sterlite Technologies executive said.

“If you look at China, they are deploying 240 million kms per year, which is nearly 12 times that of India with a population of comparable size. In Europe and the US, 8Gbps speed is becoming a norm,” Sterlite Technologies (STL) managing director Ankit Agarwal said.
