India asks Meta, X, Google to remove unlawful content, identify deepfakes or face action

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in a fresh advisory to social media giants, said that they should not permit users to host, display, publish or transmit unlawful content, and should not allow bias or threaten the integrity of the electoral process, and may face action in an event of non-compliance.

The new advisory, however, superseded the one previously issued on March 1, 2024.

“Every intermediary and platform should ensure that its computer resource in itself or through the use of Artificial Intelligence models(s)/LLM/Generative AI, software(s) or algorithm(s) does not permit any bias or discrimination or threaten the integrity of the electoral process,” it said in a notification on March 15, 2024.
