Huawei in talks with Indian telcos for 5G field trials: Jay Chen, India CEO

Chinese equipment maker Huawei said that it has started discussions with Indian telecom operators to conduct 5G field trials in the country, having secured an invitation letter from the telecom department to conduct 5G field trials.

“We have started discussions with Indian telcos… the talks are on track, and we are hopeful to start trials starting December end this year,” Jay Chen, chief executive officer at Huawei India said.

Chen said that the company will bring its global expertise around network technologies for field trials in India. He, however, added that significant investments are required for these field trials.

The Indian government has previously said that it will provide 5G airwaves and backhaul to telecom operators and telecom gear vendors for these field trials.

The Indian government intends to allocate 100 megahertz spectrum for the 5G trials.

Huawei had earlier this year conducted a lab 5G trial with Bharti Airtel in Gurgaon.
