How Google, Nvidia AI models may help predict storm path, intensity

Artificial intelligence (AI) models from tech giants like Google, Nvidia, and Huawei may help weather forecasters in judging the impact of upcoming storms. A recent study published in the npj Climate and Atmospheric Science journal highlights how machine learning (ML) can predict the path and intensity of major storms with improved accuracy and efficiency.

The study is focused on Storm Ciaran, which struck northern and central Europe in November 2023.

By analysing this storm, researchers demonstrated that AI-based weather forecasts can rival traditional methods in accuracy while being faster, cheaper, and requiring less computational power.
