Govt may offer Samsung duty relief to restart its TV production

NEW DELHI: The government has sought a commitment from Samsung that the South Korean electronics company will bring production of TVs back to India if duty on ‘open cells’ — which prompted it to relocate manufacturing to Vietnam – was removed.

The company has been “noncommittal so far,” a senior government official told ET. He said the government and the company are discussing the matter.

Samsung’s decision to shift TV production to Vietnam last year was seen as a severe setback for the government’s Make India initiative. The company’s largest production hub is located in Vietnam.
