Government opens up source code of Aarogya Setu app

  • Government has made available the source code for Aarogya Setu app to allay fears around the privacy issue raised by a few citizens. Now, with the app being open sourced, developer can inspect the software to address any potential security or privacy issues.
  • Also, with the release of the source code in the public domain, government is looking to expanding collaboration and to leverage the expertise of top technical brains in the country to collectively build a robust and secure technology solution.
  • Government said the source code for the Android version is already available for review and collaboration at https://github.com/nic-delhi/AarogyaSetu_Android.git while that of iOS will be done within the next two weeks.
  • Government said almost 98 pc of Aarogya Setu users are on Android platform.
  • The government has also launched a Bug Bounty programme wherein financial rewards will be given to security researchers for finding any vulnerability in the application or suggesting improvements to the source code.
  • The bug bounty programme will be open to Indian and foreign nationals, but only Indians will be eligible for rewards offered under the scheme. Anyone who points out a security vulnerability in the app source code will be eligible for a reward of up to Rs 3 lakh, and up to Rs 1 lakh for pointing out a suggestion or improvement in the source code.
  • Aarogya Setu’s Bug Bounty Programme has been prepared with the goal to partner with security researchers and Indian developer community to test the security effectiveness of the app and to enhance its security and build user’s trust, the government said.
  • The open source development will be managed by NIC. All code suggestions will be processed through pull request reviews. Aarogya Setu’s source code has been licensed under Apache License Version 2.0, and is available on “As-Is” basis. Any reuse of the source code with changes to the code requires the developer to carry a notice of change.
