Google red-flags government surveillance on Indians, Centre denies claim

NEW DELHI : The government has dismissed Google Threat Analysis Group’s (TAG) recent report that said more than 12,000 warnings were sent to users across 149 countries against targets by government-backed attackers.

The report said over 500 users in India were targeted by government-backed attackers, bringing the spotlight back on citizen surveillance.

“There is no reporting by Google nor has any user reported this to us. If you see the Google post there is a world map with shading. India is shown in the 500-range. They have picked up that figure to sensationalize,” a senior official familiar with the development said.
