France to tax turnover of music streaming platforms

Paris: The French government on Wednesday said it would tax the turnover of online music streaming platforms from 2024, going against the proposals of industry titans including Apple, Spotify and YouTube.

The tax will finance the French music sector and will be based on a “very low rate” on the streaming platforms’ turnover, the culture ministry told AFP.

France’s Senate in November voted in favour of such a move, welcomed by some industry bodies but opposed by titans including Spotify as a “new production tax”.
