DoT mulls proposal making it easier to migrate from prepaid to postpaid

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) may soon make it easier for mobile users to switch from prepaid to postpaid connections without having to turn up at a mobile retail store amid the ongoing Covid crisis.

It’s believed to be considering a proposal from telcos to allow conversion of mobile users from prepaid to postpaid platforms digitally, wherein it will be possible using an OTP-based, contactless process to re-validate existing e-KYC (electronic-know your customer) data, industry executives aware of the matter said.

Telcos need to authenticate a mobile user’s identity, address and photographs under the e-KYC verification process.
