DoT may take a decision on 26 GHz band for 5G: TRAI

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said that it was up to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to take a decision to open up airwaves in the 26 GHz band for the fifth generation or 5G commercial services, and the regulator can only recommend reserve price.

“Spectrum in the 26 Ghz band is something that DoT can decide. It has to make up its mind if it wants to use 26 Ghz for 5G. Our job is to recommend base price only,” Trai chairman Ram Sewak Sharma told ETT.

Indian telecom operators were demanding the government to put frequencies in the coveted 26 GHz band for auction to enable them commercially launch next-generation wireless broadband service.
