DoT extend minimum roll out obligation for the telecom operators
- DoT has extended the minimum rollout obligations to September 30 amid the continuous lockdown situation in the country giving a major relief to the telecom operators.
- Under government norms, mobile operators must roll out their network with a minimum capacity within a specific timeframe after receiving the spectrum. Because of this rule telecom operators were dreading towards the prospect of stiff penalties of around Rs 50 crore per minimum network rollout obligations (MRO) violation starting June.
- Now, according to a circular issued by DoT, relaxations are granted to licensees whose due date of registration for fulfilment of rollout obligation is between March 25 and September 30.
- Telcos had sought an extension of compliance timelines as the MRO process is a complex, entailing numerous tower site acquisitions, conducting of drive tests and securing of multiple approvals from various state authorities and local municipal bodies, which had been severely hit by the prolonged Covid-19 lockdowns.
