Crimes involving UPI, mobile wallets witness an upward trend

Businessmen, software professionals and doctors in the city are all falling prey to the fraudsters lurking in cyberspace and cashing in on the vulnerable, especially those with little knowledge of UPIs and mobile wallets.

In the last month alone, the Chennai City Central Crime Branch (CCB) has received more than 30 online fraud complaints from various parts of the city, many of them related to UPI (Unified Payment Interface).

Caught in traps

Vinaykumar, a businessman from Purasawalkam is one of the latest victims. Lured by offers, he downloaded a popular UPI app. He searched online for the customer support number and dialled the fake number, springing the trap. The fraudster asked him his debit card details and mistaking that it was a customer support executive, he shared them.
