BSNL tower company to carry out non-telecom activities: Report

NEW DELHI: The non-telecom matters and activities of the state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be undertaken by its subsidiary BSNL Tower Corporation (BTCL), that has already commenced a separate accounting process from 1 October, The Hindu BusinessLine reported.
BTCL will oversee the projects where the state-run telco is largely a facilitator. The move is being seen as an attempt to reduce license fee liability on activities that do not require the use of telecom licenses.
Under the new arrangement, BTCL will now undertake smart city projects, enterprise business, it will take external work as project management consultants for state governments, public sector banks, and autonomous bodies, among others, as per a letter by BSNL chairman and MD PK Purwar that the publication accessed.
