Bengaluru: QR code fraud makes up 40% of cases since 2017

Bengaluru: A 30-year-old Indian Institute of Science professor, who sought to sell his washing machine on an online marketplace on August 11, lost over Rs 60,000 to cybercriminals.

The professor received a call from a person who evinced interest in buying the product. Without bargaining, the caller also agreed to pay the price demanded.

“I will send the QR code. Please scan it and you will get the money deposited into your bank account,” he said. The professor scanned the code and in no time, Rs 63,000 was siphoned off in different instalments.
