Airtel Uganda says granted Nation Telecom Operator license for 20 years

Airtel Uganda, a subsidiary of Airtel Africa, said it has been issued a National Telecom Operator (NTO) license by paying $74.6 million which includes a VAT amount of $11.4 million.

The new license is effective from 1 July 2020 and will be valid for a period of 20 years.

“Airtel Uganda thanks the Government of Uganda and the Uganda Communications Commission for its cooperation on this important process,” the telco said in an official statement.

It will continue to retain its existing spectrum and the scope of license will encompass basic telecom services, infrastructure services, and value-added telecom services.

The telco has also committed to achieving a 90% coverage of the geographical area of Uganda from the date of license issuance with a minimum obligation of providing voice and data services.

Shares in Airtel Africa were up by 1.31% at 77.10 pence at 5:05 pm GMT on Saturday.
