Airtel ready to offer 5G with 4G bands, needs mid-band for true 5G speeds, says CEO Vittal

Bharti Airtel, India’s second largest telecom operator, has said it is ready to roll out a 5G network “in a matter of months”, after becoming the country’s first telco to demonstrate live services on the next generation network on its commercial 4G network in Hyderabad, trumping bitter rival Reliance Jio in the process.

According to analysts, market leader Reliance Jio, which has said it will be ready to launch 5G in the second half of 2021 on its own technology, won’t have the first-mover advantage with Airtel successfully demonstrating its 5G network readiness on existing spectrum bands.
