Frauds hack FB profiles, take over WhatsApp with OTP
KOLKATA: A student and a businessman have lodged complaints with the Kolkata Police cyber cell claiming that cyber fraudsters, who were either impersonating them on Facebook or directly hacking their FB profile, were contacting people on their friends’ lists through Messenger and trying to dupe them on the pretext of running yoga classes. The city found multiple such victims for the first time on World Yoga Day on June 21 this year.
Under a new modus operandi, the accused are asking these contacts of the victims to join yoga classes organized by the profile holder. A link is sent and the unsuspecting victim is asked to click on the link. The contacts are then informed that to join these yoga classes, they have to share a six-digit OTP code with them along with clicking the link. “Once the link is clicked and the OTP shared, the accused can use the WhatsApp number from another phone,” said an investigating officer.
