Meta to remove news content from Facebook, Instagram in Canada, here’s why

Social media giant Meta has announced its decision to remove news content from its popular platforms, Facebook and Instagram in Canada. According to a report by Reuters, the company has been planning to make this change once parliament-approved legislation requiring internet giants to pay news publishers comes into effect. This new Canadian law is called the Online News Act. The country’s Senate upper chamber has already approved the proposal and is set to become law once it receives royal assent from the governor-general. In a statement, Meta said: “We are confirming that news availability will be ended on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada prior to the Online News Act taking effect.”
