Google moves NCLAT over CCI fine on ‘dominance’

NEW DELHI: Hit hard by regulatory action against its India business over anti-competitive practices and abuse of dominance, US tech giant Google has legally challenged the order of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), terming the decision as a “major setback” for Android’s Indian users as well as businesses, which use the ubiquitous operating system.

Google, which was slapped with a fine of Rs 1,338 crore by CCI after being found guilty of anti-competitive behaviour in the Android mobile app ecosystem, has approached the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against the action.

“We have decided to appeal the CCI’s decision on Android as we believe it presents a major setback to our Indian users and businesses who trust Android’s security features, and potentially raising the cost of mobile devices,” a spokesperson for the company said.
