DCC allows VSAT operators to provide satellite-based backhaul connectivity to telcos

Kolkata/New Delhi: The Digital Communications Commission (DCC) has accepted the sector regulator’s call to allow VSAT operators to provide satellite-based cellular backhaul connectivity to telcos to ensure uninterrupted mobile broadband coverage in remote and far-flung regions.

“DCC has approved Trai’s recommendation, barring on the SUC (spectrum usage charge), which needs further deliberations. This will improve the ease of doing business, reduce capex requirements, allow better mobile services to consumers in areas where it will be difficult to fiberize,” telecom secretary Anshu Prakash told ET.

“Secondly, we approved the RFP (request for proposal) for Bharat Net and within seven days, we should be able to float the tender to start the process,” he added.
