Twitter rebuked by Parliamentary standing committee on IT; told to fall in line with laws of India

NEW DELHI: In the eye of a storm over its reluctance to follow the new IT rules, American micro-blogging giant Twitter was rebuked by the Parliamentary standing committee on IT and told to fall in line with the laws of the country “instead of going by its company standards.”

Twitter officials appeared before the standing committee members at a time when the company is understood to have lost its ‘safe harbour’ status in India that granted it legal immunity against any ‘unlawful’ and ‘inflammatory’ content posted on the platform by a subscriber.

The Parliamentary committee was attended by its chairman and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, apart from other members such as Mahua Moitra (TMC), Nishikant Dubey (BJP), and Rajyavardhan Rathor.
